«The woman», “This film oughta be confiscated!”

Pollyanna MckintoshThe Sundance Film Festival is by far the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. This year, Lucky McKee (May, Red, The Woods) has directed and co-written The Woman with Jack Ketchum, a horror film that has caused a stir in Sundance for its onscreen violence. A young woman fell and smashed her head trying to leave the theatre while a viewer lambasted the director ranting in the lobby as seen on Youtube by thousands (“This film oughta be confiscated!, he would shout). But is The Woman really so brutal? And what was the reaction of the film critics? Els Maleïts Bastards has talked to Pollyanna McIntosh, the actress in the role of The woman to see how she experienced that day.

How was your experience when working on The woman?

Working on «The Woman» was a joy for many reasons. First off Lucky McKee is a great storyteller and his close team communicated very well with each other so there was little to no tension on set. Then there was the other actors, Angela Bettis («May», «Girl Interrupted») and Sean Bridgers («Deadwood», «True Blood») whose talent and work ethic is astounding and their friendship invaluable.

It was an unusual role for me in many ways as I speak very little in the film and am physically confined for most of it but I discovered that this made the work only more enjoyable, intense and focussed. I had researched animal movement and “society” as well as our human ancient history, especially ancient myths, extensively and had worked on the script and book with Lucky for so long, passing ideas back and forth about how it would be shot, that when it came to shooting I really just needed to get into costume (and a very long makeup sitting) with my mood board in front of me, listen to some Bjork and I was away.

The character came naturally and it amuses me to hear people at Sundance ask me, “how did you do it?!”,  “You’re so unrecognisable as «The Woman» in real life!”, “How did you make those sounds?!”. I just tell them that if they were given a reason to go back to their basic instincts they would be the same way. I love my job for giving me the opportunity to explore those sides of myself and, judging from the response so far, to move others with it.

Why was the reaction of some people of the audience so harsh?

It’s a very visceral film and the ending does go a little bat shit. I really felt for the woman who passed out at our premiere screening as I know friends who have had bad reactions to blood or choppy cutting in films. It’s such a horrible thing to feel that way alone and in public at the same time.

The film has an R rating but of course if you’re susceptible to fainting from this sort of thing, best watch it with a friend….and an icepack. As for the guy who objected to the content so loudly, I really think he couldn’t help himself. The film deals with abuse in a very confrontational way and, in my mind, what he was shown made him angry (as it should) but I just feel his anger was misdirected. It’s not Lucky as a filmmaker that is being misogynistic or abusive, he’s showing how things are and in a way, I feel, that is unusual and effective.

For me, as for many of the critics who responded so well to the film, this is definitely an equal opportunities movie, some would say a feminist film. My favourite part where the film messes with your usual horror/women/violence theme is the rape scene. These are so often eroticised or pumped up in some way. The opposite is true here and I find it very effective. Rape is outrageously common and my character is not one to be beaten by it. I like that.
